 | | From the first hesitant beginning in the middle of the 19th century with the railroads between Copenhagen and Roskilde and Elsinore respectively, the building of railways accelerated and around the turn of the century and in the beginning of the 20th century the railways were numerous and the plans for new sections were even more numerous.
Since then many railway lines, national as well as private, have been closed down and the extent of railways in Denmark has stabilized.
Of course, new lines have been established in conjunction with the major infrastructure projects, the Great Belt Link and the Oresund Link.
ISC has carried out designs related to railways – some as station buildings and some as track carrying bridges in Denmark and abroad.
Inevitable the Oresund Link is the most characteristic example of the latter category, but also the railway bridges at Köpmannebro near Vänern in Sweden deserve to be mentioned for their innovative design and unconventional way of construction. The bridges are described in the topic “Bridges”.
The Botnia Link along the East coast of Sweden including 140 bridges – larger and smaller – could have been a very interesting assignment.
Instead the third - and so far the last - part of the Copenhagen Metro with its variety of structures became the project to cause ISC in the future to both want - and be able to – participate when the Danish railway lines are being upgraded.
