Road and footbridges in Copenhagen’s Inner Harbour
Working closely with CG Jensen as the design-and-build contractor, as well as By og Havn, Sjælsø, NPV A/S and NRE Copenhagen A/S, ISC has prepared concept designs, preliminary designs, designs for regulatory approval and subsequent detailed designs for a total of 14 road bridges, 13 footbridges and one timber jetty in Copenhagen’s Inner Harbour and South Harbour.
The bridges form part of newly developed residential neighbourhoods, connecting the individual residential islands separated by newly established canals.
The footbridges span the canals, generally with two longitudinal box sections serving as edge girders. Some bridges with longer spans are continuous over intermediate supports. The footbridges range in length from 9 m to approximately 40 m, with a typical width of 3–5 m. Three of the footbridges incorporate bascule spans. These three bridges feature a torsionally stiff transverse box girder above the concrete intermediate support at the centre of the bridge. The hollow interior of the girder serves as a machinery room for the operating mechanism, which primarily consists of a hydraulic power unit and two hydraulic cylinders that operate the bascule span.
The footbridges feature bespoke parapets with vertical posts welded to the bridge edge girders and tensioned stainless steel wire infill. Some bridges have bespoke parapets consisting solely of vertical steel plate posts, with integrated handrail lighting and upward-facing accent lighting illuminating the posts. All bridges are constructed from painted steel, with decks finished in FSC-certified azobé timber planks.
